A small to medium-sized tree to 15 m tall with spreading or pendulous branches, pinnate leaves and masses of spectacular, greenish yellow, bell-shaped flowers. Sophora tetraptera is native to open forests, forest margins, scrubland and riverbanks on the North Island of New Zealand. It adapts well to cultivation in many warm temperate climates and resents both very high and very low temperatures.
