A wild relative of our garden tomato (S. lycopersicon), the currant tomato is a vine originally native to South America, from Ecuador to Peru, where it grows in wet places, generally at low to moderate elevations. Today, it is also cultivated in other parts of the world. It has oval to elliptical shaped leaves, yellow flowers and globose, edible red fruits. Solanum pimpinellifolium is often included in breeding programs aimed to increase resistance and flavor of the common tomato.
