A very unusual looking Bromeliad that is terrestrial or epiphytic near ground level and native to rainforests between 100 and 1400 m from Panama to Peru. It forms a large rosette of broad, arching leaves with distinct petioles and a short inflorescence followed by round, purple or black seed pods that explode to release the seeds when ripe. Ronnbergia explodens will make a stunning ornamental for the tropics.
