A giant conifer, and the largest species in the family Pinaceae, that can reach over 90 m (295 ft.) tall with a trunk to over 4 m (13 ft.) in diameter and a tall, narrow to conical crown. The dense leaves are short, needle-like and green. Pseudotsuga menziesii var. menziesii is found as a major component of forests mostly on fertile, slightly acidic soils along the pacific coast from central British Columbia in Canada south to central California. While it reaches an altitude of 760 m at the northern end of its range, it is found up to 2300 m (7500 ft.) in the Sierra in California. It is a popular, fast growing ornamental in many parts of the world, but also one of the world's most important timber trees and also makes a great Christmas tree. Suitable for USDA plant hardiness Zones 5 to 7. Seeds require cold stratification for at least a month after soaking and sowing.
