This medium-sized, terrestrial bromeliad forms big clusters of broad, strap-like, arching leaves to 1 m long and upright inflorescences with many bright red flowers. It is native to the Andes from Colombia to northern Peru between 1200 to 2900, where it usually grows in montane forests and cloud forests, often forming colonies on steep banks. In cultivation, Pitcairnia lehmannii is largely unknown but would make a fine ornamental plant for warm temperate and cooler tropical climates.
