Like Phormium tenax, P. colensoi is native to New Zealand. While generally similar to the former, it stays much smaller in overall size and has a more lax and graceful appearance. It will grow anywhere that P. tenax will, is extremely tolerant of wind and can take coastal exposure as well as severe freezes.
