A widely grown and enormously popular ornamental ginger that originates in southern Asia and is found in humid forests up to 1800 m 5900 ft. Its shoots will grow 1.2 to 3 m (4 to 10 ft.) tall and produce a terminal inflorescence with many white, strongly scented flowers that are reminiscent of butterflies in shape and Gardenias in scent. While the leafy shoots are not cold hardy, the thick underground rhizome will easily survive some cold and drought. In the tropics it will grow and flower year-round.
