A rare and attractive small bromeliad, endemic to Mexico, in the states of Guerrero, Puebla and Oaxaca, where it grows on rocky soils at elevations between 700 and 1600 m. It presents long, pointed, yellowish to grayish green leaves, fiercely armed with curved spines, each surrounded by a red spot. The densely branched inflorescence has light yellow or cream colored flowers. Hechtia sphaeroblasta is rare in cultivation but will adapt well to dry tropical and warm temperate climates.
