A small, clustering bromeliad native to the highlands of central Mexico, where it grows on rocky ground or on rocky outcrops in low dry forest or scrubland between 1700 and 2200 m. It forms a rosette of narrow, heavily armed leaves. In cultivation it is easily grown in a wide range of warm temperate climates.
