An attractive, smallish, terrestrial bromeliad, widely distributed from the southern U.S. throughout Mexico to Guatemala, in canyons, valleys and on steep, rocky slopes. It forms low spreading rosettes with arching leaves to about 40 cm tall, armed with recurved spines, distributed along the margins and inflorescences with white flowers. It adapts well to cultivation and tolerates drought and high temperatures, and when established, it can resist moderate freezes. Hectia glomerata is an excellent plant for dry areas and it is especially attractive when, under the effect of the sun, its leaves turn reddish-purple or mottled.
