This large, clustering bromeliad forms rosettes of narrow, leathery leaves with spiny edges and drooping tips. It produces edible and divinely flavored fruits, known as 'chupones' that are said to combine the flavor of pineapple, coconut and kiwi in a single fruit. Native to southern central Chile, it grows in the unerstory or on the edge of forests and will adapt to warm temperate climates with occasional moderate freezes.
