This conifer is native to humid forests between 300 and 1800 m in southern China and grows as a shrub or small tree to about 4 m tall. The thick, soft, needle-like leaves are pale green above and whitish below. The attractive purplish fruits are edible. It is easy to cultivate and best suited to temperate climates in USDA Zones 8 to 10.
