A typical plant of tropical seashores, this vine forms large mats of sturdy shoots with thick, leathery leaves and purplish pink flowers that grow on coastal dunes and beaches throughout the tropics worldwide. It is similar to Ipomoea pes-caprae in general appearance, which shares the same ecological niche, but the two are not related. The immature pods and seeds are edible and mature seeds can also be eaten after roasting or boiling. In cultivation it makes an excellent ground cover that will withstand drought, poor, sandy, saline soils, and look good even under the harshest coastal conditions. It is suitable for tropical and warm temperate climates in USDA Zones 9 and above.
