A medium-sized, evergreen tree, native to montane forests from the Himalayas in northeastern India to Southeast Asia, Hainan and south to the Malay Peninsula. The small, edible, cherry like fruits with fleshy arils that are sweet and sour are a favorite among children when in season and are often used for pickling, jams and fruit wine.
