Santa Barbara at a glance

Ideally located on California’s central coastline, Santa Barbara looks like something out of a postcard. Picture sunlight streaming through tall palm trees, broad beaches and gorgeous Spanish-style architecture. This part of California is often referred to as the “American Riviera,” thanks to the combination of the sweeping Pacific Ocean coastline and the rugged Santa Ynez Mountains.

Santa Barbara boasts 300 days of sunshine a year and a mild, Mediterranean climate: warm and dry in the summer, cool with occasional rain in the winter. In addition to a climate that’s great for outdoor activities, the Central California coast is also a great place to grow wine grapes — which means there are over 100 wineries in the surrounding Santa Maria and Santa Ynez Valleys, all within 30 minutes or so of downtown. And even if you don’t have time for a full-fledged wine tasting day up in the mountains, Santa Barbara’s charming downtown has an urban wine trail that leads you to 25+ tasting rooms in the heart of town.

When you’re ready to sink your toes into the sand, Santa Barbara has multiple beaches to choose from: Leadbetter Beach for watersports, Arroyo Burro if you’ve got Fido in tow, or Butterfly Beach in Montecito for world-class sunsets.
