Hotel Calypso

Overlooking a small public beach and marina with traditional fishing boats, the hotel's selling point is its location. The Calypso takes advantage of its setting by providing gorgeous vistas from its rooftop pool and seasonal eatery, as well as its Sunset Bar and many rooms. Unfortunately, room interiors are stuck in the past and need an update, and the rest of the property lacks character -- don't expect much color or artwork here. Nevertheless, the central setting and quiet atmosphere attract low-key travelers who care more about a comfy room and easy access to area sights. Note that there's little geared toward children here, making it better suited to couples on vacation.

In the heart of Marsalforn, surrounded by small cafes and restaurants, the hotel sits a one-minute walk from the beach, marina, and a diving center. A nearby bus stop can take travelers to various island destinations, or the hotel can organize car rentals. With connections to Malta itself, Gozo Ferry Terminal is a 20-minute drive, or 45 minutes by bus, and the nearby city of Victoria can be reached by bus or car in 10 minutes. The immediate beach can get crowded in summer, so for an alternative, Ramla Beach is a quick 10-minute drive. Travelers can get to Gozo's Museum Of Archaeology in around the same time (or twice that by bus). Ggantija's Neolithic temples and former site of the Azure Window are both within a 20-minute drive, as is the historic Ta' Pinu Shrine.

Malta International Airport is a 90-minute journey, including a ferry ride.

Low-frills rooms are dated and outfitted in the same bland decor, consisting of traditional honey-toned wood furniture, white tile floors and unadorned artwork, and old-fashioned blue bedspreads and striped curtains. Also in need of a refresh are the old tube-style TV. Nevertheless, they're decently sized and have small balconies (some unfurnished) offering charming inland, sea, or bay views, although some have unattractive building vistas. All are air-conditioned and come with minibars, desks, armchairs, and wooden wardrobes. No kettles are provided and safes require a deposit. Larger suites come with separate living areas and better-sized balconies. Compact bathrooms have just the essentials, including shower/tub combos, hose-style hairdryers, and basic toiletries. Suite bathrooms are larger, adding jetted tubs, robes, and slippers. The Presidential Suite has two separate living areas and a full terrace with dining furniture and sunbeds. Wi-Fi is free in all rooms.

Although small, the rooftop pool is pleasant for a quick dip and has lovely views of the sea and surrounding area. Cushioned loungers line its perimeter. A rooftop eatery is open for dinner in the summer. Guests can also dine at either of the hotel's two year-round restaurants, with seafood and Italian dishes on offer. All rates include free buffet breakfast with made-to-order omelets. Views from the poolside Sunset Bar are pleasant and snacks are served throughout the day. A small business center has printing and copy facilities, plus there are function rooms on-site. Wi-Fi is free throughout.
