Hotel Costa Calero

Hotel Costa Calero is a sprawling property with several low buildings forming a rectangle around the pools and common spaces, surrounded by lovely, lush grounds dotted with palm trees, cacti, and flowers. The vibe here is serene and relaxed, and though it is one of the most popular properties in town, it rarely feels crowded or overrun with kids. The multi-level lobby is huge and bright, with floor-to-ceiling windows and high ceilings. Seating clusters with plants and comfy couches are spread throughout the airy space, adding to the quiet, friendly atmosphere. 

The property is located on a steep hill in quiet Puerto Calero, a residential area home to a couple of other hotels and a handful of bars. There is a marina and a few restaurants and shops an easy stroll from the hotel, but guests can find more options, a livelier atmosphere, and a couple of sandy beaches in Puerto del Carmen, a 10-minute drive away. The hotel offers free shuttle service several times a day. Costa Papagayo’s famous beaches and Timanfaya National Volcano Park are each a 20-minute drive away. The airport can be reached in about 15 minutes. 

The hotel has 324 rooms, all featuring a small seating area with an armchair and a table, and floor-to-ceiling windows that open onto furnished balconies or patios. Decor is contemporary, with clean lines, dark wooden furniture, and a simple beige-and-orange color scheme. Standard amenities include flat-screen TVs, air-conditioning, mini-fridges, and free Wi-Fi. Extras such as electric kettles, robes, diaper-changing tables, and other baby amenities can be borrowed for a deposit. All-inclusive Prestige guests get a wide array of Clarins toiletries as well as stocked minibars. Those traveling with children or in a group can choose from several room types, including Family Rooms for up to two adults and four kids under 12, and One- or Two-Bedroom Suites with separate living areas. The best ocean views can be had from the top floors, as palm trees can block the vistas from some units on lower floors.

The hotel has four outdoor pools -- including a saltwater pool and a kids' pool -- three of which are heated during the winter. All have dozens of loungers and parasols around them, and there is a bar with outdoor seating from which guests can order drinks to enjoy by the pool. Additionally, there are two other bars: one with sunset views and piano concerts, and one offering live shows at night. Main meals are served at the buffet and a la carte restaurants, both of which get consistently good reviews from guests. The spa is airy and relaxing, and features an outdoor pool, a hair and nail salon, a whirlpool, a steam room, and a sauna. A wide array of cardio and strength-training machines can be found at the fitness center, which also offers stretching areas and spinning bikes. Kid-friendly amenities abound and include a kids’ club, arcade, and playground. Additionally, the hotel features four meeting rooms, a business center, a full entertainment program, parking, and babysitting services. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout.
