This species known as the Amazonian zebra plant is a very hardy easy-to-grow plant that does well in a medium size orchid bark mix, although often people in South Florida grow them in pro mix without any issues as well. These plants have beautiful zebra-striped spiky leaves that when grown in strong sunlight the darker green areas turn black. The flowers are colored in orange, red and yellow and flower for a long period of time.
Here in Minnesota winter light causes them to lose the darker coloration until summer. When grown out of doors in stronger light they resume their blackish colored stripes. The flower spikes are about 18” tall and have a branching habit with red and yellow flowers. The plants we offer are large specimens we with at least a 32" leaf span and have been in our collection for many years. These are difficult to find now, especially at the sizes we offer.
**Please note: You will receive a large mature growth, which may have a new second growth emerging, or one old, previously bloomed growth with a mature, unbloomed new growth as well. The mature growths slowly die off once they have flowered. This dieback can take 2-3 years. but not without producing new growth which will mature and flower. The old growths will remain for sometime providing energy to the front growth(s).
