Common Name The Hairy Tongued Restrepia

Flower Size 1 1/4" [3 cm]

Found in Mexico, Costa Rica, Panama, Colombia, Peru and Ecuador in wet cool cloud forests at altitudes of 300 to 3200 meters as a small sized, warm to cold growing, caespitose epiphyte with the ramicaul concealed by 4 to 8, large, compressed scarious, tubular, imbricate sheaths and carrying a single, apical, erect, elliptic-ovate, minutely bidentate, broadly cuneate to rounded base contacted into the twisted petiolate base leaf that blooms in the summer and early fall on a terminal, arising on the back of the leaf, held in a fascile, 2" [5 cm] long, successively single flowered, fasciculate inflorescence with an obovate, obtuse, inflated, shorter than the pedicel floral bract and holding the flowers above and behind the leaf.

"The flowers are small to medium sized with a white, pink or yellow synsepal that is finely dotted or striped in red or purple. Fine lines often break up into dots below the middle and sometimes they dissappear or break up into dots towards the apex. The lip is slender with the epichile narrowly oblong, less than .08" [2 mm] wide and minutely verrucose and with serrate margins. The yellow thinly striped synsepal of R trichoglossa is similatr to that of Restrepia brachypus but the latter is larger vegetatively and florally witha broader lip. Striped forms of R trichoglosssa are also similar to Restrepia wageneri which is distinguished by the oblong, non-fringed lip." Luer 1996
