EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite hand-colored copperplate engraving showcases the enchanting beauty of Rhodophiala advena, also known as the Red Habranth or Habranthus miniatus. The image, created by Frederick W. Smith after J. Hart, was published in John Lindley and Robert Sweet's Ornamental Flower Garden and Shrubbery in 1854 by G. Willis in London. Rhodophiala advena is a bulbous perennial herb native to South America, specifically Chile and Argentina. The plant produces large, showy, and fragrant flowers that bloom in the late fall or early winter. These flowers display a striking combination of red, pink, and white hues, with six petals arranged in two whorls. The outer petals are large and broad, while the inner petals are narrower and more delicate. The intricate detail and vibrant colors in this botanical illustration highlight the unique features of the Rhodophiala advena. The meticulous hand-coloring adds depth and dimension to the engraving, bringing the flower to life and capturing its allure. John Lindley (1799-1865) was a renowned British botanist, horticulturist, and writer. He was a prolific author and contributed significantly to the field of botany through his numerous publications. Robert Sweet (1783-1835) was a prominent English botanist, horticulturist, and nurseryman. Together, they produced Ornamental Flower Garden and Shrubbery, which showcased a wide variety of ornamental plants and was widely regarded as a seminal work in the field of horticulture. This illustration of Rhodophiala advena is a testament to the artistry and scientific precision of the time, providing a window into the botanical world of the mid-19th century.
