Come and see the so-called "Inktpot", another landmark of the beautiful city of Utrecht, but at the same time very uncommon in the Dutch landscape!

The Inkwell, more famously known as De Inktpot is the name of ProRail’s iconic head office. Shaped like a giant ink well, it is the biggest brick building in the whole country.

Did you know that old rails were used to build the foundation of the building? And that more than 22 million bricks and 4,000 m³ of oak timber went into the construction process? It's huge, right?

Most of the interior design has remained the same as it has first been built in 1921, such as the Art Deco clocks in the offices. Unfortunately, the interior cannot be visited, but we can still imagine how those clocks look like!

What we can see instead is the eye-catching UFO, an artwork of 12 metres which was initially constructed for an art exhibition and then was left there permanently.

Tips and Tricks

Check in the website when the building is opened up to the public as part of Heritage Day (every year on the second weekend of September), as the building's interior isn't usually accessible to public since it's used as the ProRail head quarter.

Getting there By foot: Utrecht Centraal train station is just around the corner, within 5 minutes walk!
