Goodbye Peugeot 405!
If you live in a European country or USA and you have some driving experience of this D-segment family sedan, you are probably in your 40s. However, this experience is far more different in some other countries such as Iran.
This 1988 European Car of the Year, has been in production in Iran until now! Iran Khodro, branded as #IKCO, which is an Iranian automaker and founded in 1962 is the responsible company in Iran for the production of this car for more than 29 years! Despite the fact that IKCO has done its meaningless efforts for updating this model and bringing lots of new featured models to production lines such as GLX, GL, RD, #Roa, SLX and last but not least #Arisan Pickup truck the main structure of the car remained intact which kept its old-school design.
It goes without saying that, National standard organization of Iran – #ISIRI – was the main factor which push this model out of the production line due to environmental concerns. The accident mortality rate of the 405 was staggering! To provide an example the accident death rate of this car reached 3700 people, which was 24% of the total death of the year 2018. Among the weirdest models IKCO has released, I can refer to:
Peugeot RD which Peugeot Roa based on;
- 1.6 liter 4-cylinder engine
- 69 horsepower, 110 N-m of torque
- 5-speed manual gearbox
- Same visual characteristics with 405
Arisan pickup Truck;
- 1.6 liter 4-cylinder engine
- 86 horsepower, 140 N-m of torque
- 5-speed manual gearbox
- Maximum load capacity of 750 kg
Peugeot SLX;
- 1.6 liter 4-cylinder engine (TU5 borrowed from Peugeot 206)
- 108 horsepower, 142 N-m of torque
- 5-speed manual gearbox
- Improved facial features and fuel consumption
It should be added, some of the current products which are on sale are sharing the same backbone with 405 such as #samand, #persia (#pars) and #dena.

3yEnjoyed my time in Tehran where these are ubiquitous. Many of the ones I saw had the Paykan engine, about 80hp rather than the Peugeot engine. Distinctly remember the exhaust pipe looking like a drinking straw, unlike the current fashion for a wider exit.
