🧫 What if the “catalysts” chemists add to the reaction mixture are not the actual catalysts and only decompose to another catalytically active species? This question was asked by scientists from Tomáš Slanina Group at IOCB Prague in collaboration with Joshua P. Barham from Universität Regensburg while studying novel acridone catalysts as potent neutral single-electron-transfer (SET) photooxidants. The researchers discovered that the acridone transformed under the reaction conditions into a novel acridinium salt with a record-breaking oxidation potential that appears to function by two-electron reduction of its excited state.  This mechanism is very surprising as photoexcited acridinium salts have been reported only as one-electron oxidants until now. 📓 Read the paper: Žurauskas, J.; Boháčová, S.; Wu, S.; Butera, V.; Schmid S.; Fomański, M.; Slanina, T.; Barham, J. A little late on posting, but my 1st publication in Synthesis is out! https://lnkd.in/g8Z5XTJF A palladium-catalyzed decarboxylative dearomatization of a heterocyclic benzyl ester enabled access to an uncommon reaction intermediate that can rearomatize with simple amine bases. The dearomatized intermediate was also taken for further functionalization reactions (the IEDDA [4+2] cycloaddition was my personal favorite). Thanks to my fellow authors and to Synthesis for the invitation to the special issue on the C-H functionalization of heterocycles!

I am excited to share my first publication. The first thallium complexes of (pyridyl)borates were synthesized and characterized. Many thanks to Dr. Mukundam Vanga.

Hello! I'm excited to share my first paper from the Davies group, where I am the first author. The paper explores the reactivity of donor-acceptor carbenes towards [2.2]paracyclophanes ([2.2]PCP). Our work involved the Rh(II)-catalyzed regioselective asymmetric cyclopropanation of donor-acceptor carbenes to prepare chiral [2.2]PCP. This was achieved through the kinetic resolution of mono-substituted [2.2]PCP or the desymmetrization of pseudo-para disubstituted [2.2]PCP. Additionally, we demonstrated that this class of chiral [2.2]PCP can be used as a ligand for a new dirhodium tetracarboxylate catalyst, showing good asymmetric induction in cyclopropanation.
