A drug that is already on the market in the United States can prevent tumor-induced kidney dysfunction in two animal models. In flies and mice, tumors activated receptors on the surface of renal cells, halting water excretion and disrupting normal kidney functioning. A drug that has been approved in the United States as a treatment for post-menopause symptoms (called fezolinetant) stopped tumor-induced renal failure by inhibiting these receptors. An innovative therapeutic approach with mRNA-based therapy could change the paradigm in the treatment of some deadly diseases, including glioblastoma. Glioblastoma is a malignant disease that occurs predominantly in the brain (but can also affect the brain stem, cerebellum, and spinal cord), characterized by accelerated and aggressive growth and diffuse spread in the surrounding tissues.
