With graduation coming up this week, I have been reflecting on my time at the University of Birmingham. One of my proudest achievements, and challenges I set myself was becoming the president of the Women in Science and Engineering Society (WiSE). This role was very different from anything I had taken on before and allowed me to develop professionally and personally, through the organisation of events, performing leadership, public speaking, and negotiating sponsorship. My main highlight in this role was our Equal in STEM event which was held in March 2023. This event was a great success, not only because of the turnout but also because of the incredible panellists who supported our event including Veena Kumari, Dr Priscilla Eke, Avery Cunningham, Mariatu Davies and our keynotes speaker Carmen Morris. I would also like to give a big thank you to Adrienne Houston CEng MIET for her help with this event and her continued support of WiSE throughout the year. As well as our events, a core aim of WiSE is to inspire the next generation of Women into science and engineering. As part of the outreach programme that we run in WiSE, I volunteered at a local secondary school in Birmingham on International Women's Day, where we hosted a workshop to engage young women in science and engineering. I would also like to thank the rest of the committee as this successful year for WiSE would not have been possible without them: Katherine Heighes, Stephanie Botterill, Emelia Bradley, Tess Lillicrapp and Catherine Siddle.
