C64 Review

I have to say that I approached this game with trepidation, expecting it to be little different from its somewhat pedestrian predecessor, Stormlord. Certainly, the omens weren’t good, what with the strikingly similar plot and the fact the developers concerned had already produced the ultimate rehash in Cybernoid 2.

I was a little confounded then, when I began to play Deliverance, because it is actually quite different from the first game, bar the obvious cosmetic similarities. The object swapping and other ‘adventurey’ elements are gone and more intense ‘arcadey’ bits take up the slack. The game has more scope too, with six graphically varied levels on offer that correspond with the plotline of Stormlord’s ascent from Hell to Heaven.

The most noteworthy aspect of the game is definitely the imaginative graphics, which border on the plain weird at times - reference the giant tomatoes (an advert for GM food, surely) and the unsettling way Stormlord gets blown-up limb from limb (the stuff of nightmares). Particularly excellent are the bold, colourful and varied backgrounds, which help to create a decent ambiance and sense of purpose. The sprites, whilst still imaginative, are less consistent in quality and often look out of place against the great scenery.

Gameplay is routine in comparison and consists mainly of shooting or avoiding everything in sight. At certain points in the game, the scrolling stops and you must defeat a particular adversary, such as a giant eagle, before moving on. There is also an occasional opportunity to take to the skies on the back of a dragon: an interesting idea that sadly comes out half-baked. Other features include changeable weapons, including crossbows and bombs, and an entertaining between-level bonus round where you need to capture fairies for extra lives.

Unfortunately, the game has a couple of design flaws that take some of the gloss off what might have otherwise been a thoroughly decent blaster. The major issues are the unnecessarily large main character and odd method of jumping, which combine to make you an all too easy target and the game is consequently on the frustrating side of difficult. At least the generous number of lives and password system allow for some meaningful progress.

Then there are the instances of slowdown and flicker, which particularly ruin some interesting ‘set pieces’ including an erupting volcano and an Asteroids-inspired section. Still, I suppose this was always going to happen, given the heavy use of processor-sapping bitmapped objects.

Despite the failings, the game is still an OK slab of arcade action and generally more interesting, if not a great deal more playable, than the original Stormlord.

Summary

GRAPHICS: 8 / 10

The imaginative, varied and very well drawn backdrops and objects are a joy, just a shame about some butt-ugly sprites and flicker. 76%

SOUND: 6 / 10

The intro and in-game music is tuneful if a little unadventurous, whilst the FX is good and varied. 58%

PLAYABILITY: 6 / 10

Difficult arcade fare greatly helped by graphical variation across the levels. 63%

OVERALL: 7 / 10

A little better than one might have imagined. 66%

Frightmare's comments echo my own, apart from the fact that slowdown in certain sections is a pain and the jump mechanic, that requires two well timed prods of the joystick to jump higher, is particularly awkward to execute - to the point of vexation - in certain sections of the game.

More straight-up shoot 'em up than its predecessor, it's even better in terms of atmosphere, soundtrack, graphics and animations; more on the horror side, it features a wide array of enemies and ravishing sceneries, and the Matt Gray tunes are just classic. The only downsides are the brutal difficulty level and the jump system, not very practical, otherwise it would have been a 9/10. This was definitely one of those C64 games with a "wow factor" back in 1990, and it has aged very well.

Don't like this one much. Death traps everywhere combined with odd and awful jumping controls wrecks the feel of the game. It also dropped the puzzle elements that the first game had.

One of those many games on the C64 that seemed to prioritise being hard over being fluid and fun. Boobs and nice music, but other than those this one doesn't do it for me.

Good game nice graphics, need a little practice with the jump as you can jump higher and higher. Enjoyed the game, have some good idea like stop on a screen and fight with some enemies before you can advance. To bad you have to choose between fx and music, you can't have both of them.
Missing some end sequence badly.

I give 8/10
-1 for music or fx option only
-1 for missing end

:D

What good can be said about this game? It is quite inferior - I gave it a 4.

Just played through this and have to say that it's much better than the first game. Loads of variety in the levels and enemies and some interesting gameplay elements, inc blasteroid-influenced section. Sub-game is also fun. Good music too.

I read once the only good thing in Stormlord games is the naked babes, and I'm still quite inclined to believe that.

A beautiful follow up to a beautifully designed game. Amazing music, once again, much better level and enemy design The game is hard, but why oh why did they have to completely stuff up the jump system???

I really loved this game since it marked my youth: I remember the long sessions with old and new friends trying to pass the final bosses or to kill all that damned green men. Excellent graphics, good music, intensive gameplay... The game you want(ed) to have! :-)
