Better than it has any right to be on the C64, this is quite an achievement. Even the character animations work better than you'd expect given the small number of pixels used. Even my datalux compatible mouse works decently with this.

It's LEMMINGS, it absolutely deserves a 10! Especially it made use of the Commodore mouse. As far as the 8-bits go, yes the Master System version looks nicer and has the speech, but you're restricted to just twenty lemmings per level. Twenty! Still, it's better than the fourteen on the Game Boy. The 64 suffers from some slow down on stock hardware, but considering the limitations of the system, having upwards of 50 Lemmings all moving about at once is revolutionary.

Conversion is good but unfortunately playability is a bit weak particularly when you need to save a lot of lemmings and you don't have many assets at your diposal. It is very easy to make a mistake assigning a wrong task. Graphics represents C64 abilities and there is nothing wrong with it but music, even if it resembles original tunes, could have been way better. However if you own C-64 and you would like to see how "Lemmings" can look on this system or back in the day you couldn't afford anything more and you envied others of this the game, it is something you will enjoy.

A good conversion, but sadly released too late in the C64's lifespan, it was already an old game on the Amiga. Had it been released on the C64 at the same time it might have injected some more life into the old girl.

It was voted in the Top 100 readers games of all time in Commodore Force before it was released.

A fantastic conversion, brilliantly done. Extremely playable, especially with a mouse. As good as it could be, obviously the 16bit versions are better but I absolutely love this game and hats off to Psygnosis for releasing it in a time when most other companies wouldn't have bothered! A C64 game I can still play today, 10/10.

Once again, people are comparing apples with oranges and wondering why their fruit tastes funny...

This is a great conversion for the C64 and any Amiga player loading this up should be aware that it's just that, a conversion. As such, it entails certain sacrifices and alterations, but none of them stop it being much the same addictive and fun puzzle game that it was on the 16-bit machines.

Unlike Kick Off or North & South, the vital elements of the game are all there and it saves me getting an Amiga emulator just to play this awesome game. So there!!

I have to join the others here and voice that this is a real technical feat with the sprite background (hence the not-so-wide play area). I think its a good conversion although most people was spoilt with the Amiga version.

IMO Lemmings isn't a good conversion for C64. After a really good intro, virtually as the original on 16 bit.. You see the game is poorly and bad located on very little area, with too little, blocky sprites (backgrounds are almost perfect, tho), controls are difficult in particular when you have to save a lot of them, I think is better to play it again on Amiga, here's a waste of time.

Ahh, Lemmings! One of the greatest little games ever made by one of the greatest little companies to grace the PC; Psygnosis. I just reacently got to play this version of Lemmings and I must say that I was totally surprised and impressed with the level of quality that went into this port. Very nice indeed and worth tracking down.

Where should I begin? This game proves that nothing is impossible to convert to the C64. I mean this game was wonderful on the Amiga, and here on the C64 as well. Shame it was at the time C64 games grew rare on selves because the Commodore company and 8-bit computer was dying, yet after so many games sold it wasn't enough to save the Commodore 64, therefore it sadly nailed the coffin, even for an decent game.

This is nothing short of a stunning, faithful port of an already excellent Amiga game. 10/10

Now here is something different!!! This game is great, a must-have for every puzzle-platform gamer. Lemmings was unique back than, combining the puzzling genre with platformgaming was a plan that worked out pretty well for me. I instantly became a lemmings junky. The crazy traps around the map made you scream again and again, throwing the disc through your room. Only to pick it up 5 minutes later to give in a try again. Frustrating good!!!

Fantastic. At *least* as good as the Amiga version (it's not like the central concept is changed in any way is it?) and probably the finest conversion I have played.

@Underfly: thats very odd, you didn't enjoy the Amiga version but you loved the C-64 version? The first time I played it was on the Amiga and it was brilliant. I tried the C-64 version a month or two ago and although its a commendable effort and worthwhile for peeps at the time who didn't have an Amiga and wanted to play Lemmings, in no way does it match the quality of the Amiga version

@Karpow is right, this is techincally brillant. I never enjoyed Lemmings on the Amiga much, But C64? Miracle! 9/10

I played Lemmings on Amiga first. I never liked the game very much. C64 doesn't make difference. Basically the same game *BUT* techically this is a miracle! Simply awesome! Therefore 10/10.

Whether you like the Lemmings games or not, give the developer's their due: this is an excellent conversion of a 16-bit original.

The last really good commercial release on the 64?
I love it!
Maybe, if the late-day games would have been this good, the life of the 64 would have been extended?
I mean, look, they produced the NES until about 1995-96, and it was all but modern at that time.
shaun 2004-04-15
I'm no fan of the original version of Lemmings, although as a conversion I'd give this 10/10 - it's got a cool intro, it's got good graphics (with lots & lots of little lemmings on screen). This really is as good as it could have been on a C64 :)
Jeffrey 2004-03-29
Amiga people shouldn't comment anything about C64 games. Ofcourse everything looks better on Amiga. No problem doing goodlooking things on Amiga. I think the C64 version is quite nice.
Vim 2004-03-02
Give the developers their due, they did a good job, it's just the 16-bit versions we simply so much better. A pointless exercise.
TommyLee 2004-01-24
The Amiga version is hundred times better than this, is has better graphics.
Shaun Bebbington 2003-08-19
I remember that some of the software protection codes would not work. Still, the game was excellent.
Amatreus 2003-08-03
One word: masterpiece.
Cadaver 2003-06-23
This game does a very genious trick with the background graphics. They're actually sprites :)
Ryan 2003-06-19
I feel very lucky, cos' I've got it on tape :)
It's fantastic, that they coded and released even tape versions. However, it's a brilliant one player game, a bit late...

I totally agree to Lemonope. It's an absolutely amazing conversion. 10/10
Lemonope 2003-04-10
People who are downrating this game because "its plays no where as good as the Amiga version" are stupid. If you can imagine Lemmings looking better on a 8bit C64, then tell me! . (Something that was never intended for 8bit in the first place) Ill rate it 10/10 for 2 reasons. For being the best as possible, and for being lemmings to the C64 in the first place. Only pity is that it came too late.
stoneage 2003-02-19
I think it's not that bad. Of course the Amiga version (even the graphics) is the best. But they made quite a good job with the C64 part. So rating 8/10
Lemmi 2003-02-18
Who is downrating this game all the time? I give it a 9 or more! The only reason this game couldn't become a classic (on C-64) is that it was released too late. In 1994 golden C-64 years were over and I think all the guys who rate this game down never played it on the little Commodore. Realize that it is worth more than 7 points!!!

A very popular game...

and ists fun :)
TWR 2003-01-17
Never got the 64 version but the Amiga game was fantastic.
GM 2002-12-03
I couldn't believe it first time I heard of this conversion. But Psygnosis managed it! Last C64 game I bought. 10/10
Mr ho 2002-10-11
The Amiga version is ofcourse better but the C64 version plays quite nicely as well.
I agree that this is an impressive (tech-wise) port of the PC/Amiga version as previously said, though it seems like everyone below me forgot to mention the superb soundtrack by Jaroen Tel. Just superb. :)
Anthony Cassidy 2002-08-25
I was inspired to try maknig a lemmings game on the C64 in early '93 altho I made them out of 4*8 character blocks- and they'd walk on each others heads. Never reached a playable level tho. Can't believe they actually did this - this game *may* be more technically impressive than Turrican2.
fishdune 2002-03-20
This is amazing because C64 can only display 8 sprites at once and u need 100 sprites of 100 lemmings. Well which the screen narrowed than the Amiga version. Its given u the feel of 100 lemmings. I just out how clever this was done.
ICE MAN 2002-02-06
Game of lemmings the game has 50 fps
is one frist game to do it too!!!
Paul 2002-02-01
Technically VERY impressive game. Really pushes the limits of what the C64 can do. Graphics and music are very true to the original. Gameplay is on par, although some levels are somewhat smaller I think. Impressive conversion! You really can have 100 lemmings running around your screen at the same time!
Marauder 2002-01-20
No where near as good as the Amiga version. Just not the same...
