Tavira: History and culture
Tavira is a town on the Algarve coast in southern Portugal, 80 kilometers southeast of Faro and just 9 kilometers from Faro international airport. It’s surrounded by historic sites and boasts a lively cultural center.
This ancient Roman town on the banks of the Guadiana River boasts unique monuments dating back several centuries. The old historic centers, some of which date back to the 17th century, are home to a series of churches built in the 16th and 17th centuries (including the church of Santa Maria do Castelo), magnificent mansions, windmills from which emerge the Carmelite Convent, and a tower used during the Spanish Civil War.
On the cultural front, Tavira boasts a number of fascinating museums, including the Estrada Real Archaeological Museum and the Municipal Museum. The region is also home to a number of festivals throughout the year.
Paradise beaches
A gentle sea breeze refreshes visitors as they explore the coastal beaches offered by Tavira. The beautiful Praia do Barril, famous for its crystal-clear waters and authentic open-air cabana restaurant located on an island with wooden pontoons, is considered one of Europe’s most beautiful beaches and is well worth a visit.
What’s more, the splendid Ilha de Tavira, an island in the middle of the Gilão river, also attracts the attention of tourists. Finally, the beaches of Santa Luzia, Fuzeta and Manta Rota deserve a mention for their incomparable beauty.
Restaurants for all tastes
Tavira is bursting with restaurants that are both traditional and refined, offering a selection of Portuguese and international dishes. The La Taberna restaurant offers authentic Mediterranean cuisine, while Barrio Alto is an ideal spot for tapas. La Riviera offers simply exquisite fusion cuisine to delight visitors’ taste buds. Lovers of classic cuisine will appreciate the retro atmosphere of the Dom Álvaro restaurant.
Ria Formosa Natural Park
A visit to Tavira wouldn’t be complete without discovering the Rio Formosa Nature Reserve (Ria Formosa), a coastal natural park of untamed beauty considered one of Portugal’s finest tourist attractions. The park lies a few kilometers south of the town of Tavira and covers more than 170 square kilometers, adorned by countless small islands.
Many activities are possible here. Holidaymakers can explore the Ria Formosa Natural Park on foot or by boat, and the varied coastal habitats such as the salt marshes for which the region is internationally renowned. You can also observe tiny beaches in secluded coves, take spectacular photos of local wildlife and visit the Barril fishing reservoir, managed by the national fisheries office.

Where to park your motorhome or van in Tavira?
Tavira offers two solutions for your motorhome: free spaces and a paying service area.
- Free Spots: Under the freeway bridge, we parked quite often in this spot, which is close to the river and a children’s playground. Nights are quiet and there’s very little highway traffic during the day. At weekends, children come to play in the Skate Park. We’ve never been dislodged or hassled (at least not in off-peak periods). On foot, you’re just 5 to 10 minutes from the center. Not far from this spot, you can park your car in the parking lots, but it’s not really pleasant to spend the night there.
- Paying service area: Algarve Motorhome Park Tavira. You’ll be greeted by hosts who speak perfect French (one of the hostesses comes from Perpignan) and English. Comfort is there, and it’s very difficult to find space, as places like this are so rare. However, we strongly advise you to have a bike to get to the center.

Tavira is the ideal place to enjoy water sports, from kayaking to kitesurfing and windsurfing. There are also a variety of golf courses perfect for relaxing.
