HONOLULU (KHON2) — The National Weather Service canceled a Tsunami Watch for the State of Hawaii after an 8.2 magnitude earthquake struck off Alaska on Wednesday, July 28.
PTWC officials said the earthquake occurred around 8:16 p.m. Hawaiian Standard Time off the coast of the Alaska Peninsula.
Officials with the National Weather Service said at 10 p.m. Wednesday that the earthquake does not present a tsunami threat to Hawaii.
A 9:30 p.m. update from Pacific Tsunami Warning Center officials stated the Tsunami Watch had been continued after it went into effect at 8:25 p.m.
Residents in threatened coastal areas were advised to stay alert for information and follow instructions from national and local authorities, according to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center.
