History and description of Jargonelle

An ancient variety of unknown origin first recorded in 1629. It is one of the earliest summer pears to ripen.

Medium sized, long conical fruit. Fairly smooth, greenish yellow skin with some brownish red flush and many small russet patches. Pale yellow, tender, juicy flesh. Very sweet slightly musky flavour. Like all early ripening varieties the fruit must be picked and used as soon as ready.

Moderately vigorous with a rather straggling growth habit. Heavy cropping. A tip bearer and therefore not suitable for training into cordons or espaliers.
