Ribes oxyacanthoides
Ribes oxyacanthoides (Northern Gooseberry) cultivated in a "natural" garden that mimics its habit of shallow, rocky soil in full sun. The plants bloom very early (May 3rd here), are strongly fragrant in spite of their small size, and are pollinated by bumblebees. It produces small blackish berries and also spreads but underground runners.
''Ribes oxyacanthoides'' is a species of flowering plant in the gooseberry family known by the common name Canadian gooseberry. Its various subspecies have common names of their own. It is native to North America, where it occurs in Alaska through much of Canada and the western and north-central United States.
