The latest international trailer for Juan Antonio Bayona’s tsunami disaster drama doesn’t boast Damien Rice’s heartbreaking rendition of U2’s “One,” that made a powerful appearance in the first preview for the film, but it still sure packs a punch.

Already a hit in Europe where it smashed records over the weekend to score the biggest four-day opening in Spain (beating the likes of “The Da Vinci Code” and “Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End”), “The Impossible” recounts the true story of a family vacationing in Thailand in 2004, who become seperated when the tsunami roars through their hotel.

Reviewing the film at the Toronto International Film Festival, where it world premiered to good buzz, Eric Kohn wrote: “Bayona, whose Spanish ghost movie ‘The Orphanage’ was distinctive for its painstakingly crafted suspense, provides a reminder of his horror roots in the stunning reenactments of the tsunami’s powerful assault. The impact is particularly impressive for the lack of CGI and underwater cinematography that depicts the tsunami’s attack as a jumble of limbs and detritus rushing across the screen. Until Bayona slows things down, ‘The Impossible’ contains some of the most unsettling sequences in the history of the disaster movie genre.”

Summit opens the film in the U.S. December 21. Watch the international trailer below:
