Living overseas, it's easy to forget certain American traditions like, say, Thanksgiving. This week's Gaming Life in Japan was supposed to go up on Friday, until we realized that you guys would be either recovering from Thanksgiving or out shopping, or some combination of the two. So, while Thanksgiving is harder to celebrate in Japan due to prohibitive turkey prices (forget a turkey... try buying a whole chicken at a Japanese supermarket!) we've decided to hold back on the sour grapes and rush to get you this week's issue a bit early.
Of course, there are some perks to being in Japan. For instance, being able to take a ten minute train ride to visit Tomonobu Itagaki at the Team Ninja offices. We'll have more from that visit in the near future, but turn to our continuing look at the Xbox 360 launch for some brief Dead or Alive observations, and some general observations from the upcoming Japanese launch of Microsoft's new console.
While you're stuffing yourself with food, we'll be playing one of the thirty new game releases that made it out on Wednesday (which was actually a holiday here). Yes, the monthly tradition known as the "End of Month Game Flood" continued this month with Ikusagami, Ratchet and countless others. Hey, Nintendo fanatics -- the DS had 13 of those releases! It's no wonder retailers, in a recent Famitsu poll, picked the Nintendo portable as one of the biggest game products for the holiday sales season.
For more on that survey, and the rest of the Japanese game scene, turn the page.
ZASSHI JOUHOU GO!
This section of Gaming Life in Japan takes a look at what's big in the latest game magazines from Japan. From Famitsu to Dengeki to smaller publications like Dorimaga, Japan has lots of videogame magazines. While we tend to put up all the news and game info revealed in the magazines on the main pages of IGN, this section gives you a closer look just so you can be sure that you're not missing out on anything.
Be sure and click on the covers of each magazine for larger versions. Print them out and hold them in your hand as you read!
FAMITSU -- NO. 885
It's another slightly boring issue of Japan's biggest videogame magazine. The big feature this week is a look at three RPGs: Final Fantasy XII, Kingdom Hearts II and Rogue Galaxy. Japanese reports on RPGs are always filled with spoilers, and there's plenty of that here. The Kingdom Hearts section offers a look at Cid and Yuffie as well as two pages of Tron coverage. The Rogue Galaxy section offers a look at "Insectron," a mini game where you control bugs in battle on a chess-like board.
Elsewhere, the magazine offers an interview with Fumito Ueda and Kenji Kaidou on Shadow of the Colossus. These two always have their hands up at upper chest level during interviews, like they're explaining concepts to the interviewer. The interview includes some gorgeous concept art that Famitsu received at the 9/11/2004 unveiling press conference.
The magazine's news section includes a look at the holiday sales rush and what users and retailers expect to be big. The magazine collected 907 responses from the Famitsu.com website and 220 responses from retailers throughout Japan.
Users and retailers together expect Kingdom Hearts II to be the biggest thing for the holiday season. Xbox 360 comes in second followed by the DS, Tales of the Abyss, Rogue Galaxy, Mario Kart DS, Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection, Resident Evil 4, Animal Crossing DS and Final Fantasy IV Advance. Wow! PSP got beaten by a USB router!
Looking at just software, users seem particularly interested in purchasing Kingdom Hearts II. This is followed by Rogue Galaxy, Tales of the Abyss (mirroring the Famitsu most wanted list), Mario Kart DS, Resident Evil 4, Monster Hunter Portable, Metal Gear Solid 3, Animal Crossing DS, Final Fantasy IV Advance and X360 Ridge Racer 6.
Looking specifically at the X360, 14.6% of responders said that they will definitely be purchasing the system. 23.8% are looking into the idea of purchasing a system while 15.6% are planning on purchasing it, but not this year. The remaining 46% claim no interesting in purchasing the system in the future.
Retailers have a somewhat darker outlook on the X360. While 31.5% expect better performance when compared to the current generation Xbox, 23.3% expect no change at all and 26% actually expect the system to perform worse! Only 5.5% expect the X360 to perform much better than the Xbox.
Lots of reviews this week, closing off November.

DENGEKI PS -- 11/25
Gundam Seed takes the top spot in this week's Dengeki PlayStation. The magazine includes a look at not just the game but at all products in the Gundam Seed universe as well.
Other game's covered in this issue include Suikoden V and Tales of Legendia. Onimusha and Soul Calibur III each get four pages.
The magazine's Ryu ga Gotoku coverage includes a short interview with the game's general director, Ryuta Ueda. Ueda previously worked on Jet Set Radio and Panzer Dragon Orta, and in this interview, he reveals that based on how well you play and how strong your make your character, the difficulty for the latter half of the game will change. Character development takes two forms in the game: you earn new skills, and you gain the feeling of being more powerful. Ueda also comments on the cell phone that you obtain in the third chapter of the game. You'll receive messages from club hostesses via this device. And on the subject of phones, you'll be able to save your game at payphones, Ueda reveals.
Also interviewed in this week's issue is Square Enix's Yoshinori Kitase, director of Final Fantasy VII and the producer of Dirge of Cerberus. Kitase reveals that he's interested in all three next generation game systems, but personally, the Revolution interests him most thanks to its controller. He also states that he expects to have a part in the development of the new PS3 Final Fantasy game. As for a remake of FFVII, while he doesn't rule out the possibility of it happening, his comments suggest that the time isn't right, as his team has only released two of the four announced compilation games.
Tetsuya Nomura is also interviewed in the magazine, and he reveals that he already has a project set once Kingdom Hearts II is finished. And no, it's not a remake of FFVII. Asked if he'd rather work on a remake of FFVII or an FFVII-2 type of sequel, he states that due to the release of Advent Children, making an FFVII sequel seems like it would be difficulty, but adds with a laugh that looking at Dirge of Cerberus, it might not be so hard. He feels that making a sequel would be more dangerous than making a remake.
Just a handful of numbered review scores in this week's Dengeki PlayStation.

FAMITSU CUBE -- JAN '05
Famitsu Cube has a particularly crowded cover this month. From what we can gather, the focus of the cover is on Animal Crossing DS. But, then again, there's also character artwork for the Mario family and Pokemon. And what's up with Mega Man on the bottom right corner?
Oh well... at least this cover isn't as confusing as Dengeki GameCube. We'll share that mess with you in next week's GLIJ.
The big news this month is that Santa has come to town and is delivering ten copies each of Animal Crossing DS, Mario Kart DS, Mario Party 7 and Pokemon Mysterious Dungeon (only one version) to readers. These are, coincidentally, the big games covered in the magazine.
Also covered in the issue is Mario & Luigi RPG 2x2 (that's the full Japanese name). The magazine shows a giant version of Yoshi and a bright yellow desert stage. The title will hit Japan on 12/29, although the US version, of course, arrives a month before that.
Here's this month's sales chart:
# | SYS | GAME | PUB | RELEASE | SALES | TOTAL |
1 | DS | Tamagocchi no Puchi Puchi Omisecchi | Bandai | 09.15.05 | 101,723 | 329,979 |

10 | GCN | Famicom Wars | Nintendo | 11.02.05 | 30,545 | 30,545 |
PS2=PlayStation 2, GCN=GameCube, DS=Nintendo DS
PSP=PlayStation Portable, GBA=Game Boy Advance
Other points of interest from the chart includes Jump Super Stars at 12, with total sales of 409,016 units, Sawaru Made in Wario at 20, with a total of 809,214 units and Mushi King at 13, with a total of 589,828 units. Sega's Akadoko, the sequel to Feel the Magic, managed just 15th place in its first week, with sales of 15,580 units.
This month's sticker sheet is one you'll definitely want, as it includes stickers of the Mario family and their carts from Mario Kart. Also included are stickers for Animal Crossing, which are meant to be used with the included Animal Crossing note book.
And on the note of bonuses, the editors of Famitsu Cube went absolutely nuts this issue, and opted to include a bonus that's three times as thick as the magazine itself!
The bonus pictured above is a Pokemon/Rockman combo bag and is the reason why only two copies of Famitsu Cube could be displayed simultaneously at retail this month.
This month's issue is packed with reviews, thanks to the flood of DS releases.

Turn the page for a look at the Xbox 360 launch.
LAUNCH WATCH
Last year, when the PSP and DS launches took place right on top of one another, Gaming Life in Japan provided you with weekly updates on the state of both systems' launch programs. We're certain that Microsoft Japan will be pushing the Xbox 360 just as hard as Sony and Nintendo pushed their systems last year, so we've resurrected our Launch Watch feature for the Xbox 360 launch Every week, we'll let you in on what's going down in Xbox 360 launch land over in Japan.
Our most recent column gave you a video tour of the X360 lounge opening. In the column from the week before, we took a look at the X360's appearance at the WPC Expo, the first X360 store displays and banner ads and the final retail X360 bundle. Our first launch report had an event calendar and some packaging pics.
This week, we begin with some troubling news: delays. Xbox 360 was supposed to, in a Japanese rarity, launch with a role playing game that everyone wanted to play. Alas, From Software's Enchant Arm got delayed this past week, from its original 12/10 release date to 1/12. The delay was quickly followed by one for Ninety-Nine Nights, which budged from its 1/12 release date to some time in Spring.
On top of that, there have been some rumors about the status of Dead or Alive 4. The game was already delayed past the US launch, and has been rumored to be set for a delay in Japan as well. IGN visited Team Ninja on the day of the 360's US launch and learned that the game is currently 95% complete. Sadly, we couldn't get a direct answer on the game's chances of making it out at the Japanese launch. It's worth noting, though, that all retailers are still listing the game as a launch title, so perhaps Team Ninja will be able to crunch out that extra 5% in time for release.
Possible delays aside, DOA4 is looking like it will be worth the wait. The game is visually stunning (particularly some of the stages that haven't been shown to the public yet) and has so much content that it's hard to believe it's coming out so early in the system's life. We'll have a whole lot more on the game shortly.
Assuming DOA makes it out in time, the Xbox 360 is still suffering somewhat in the software department. Ridge Racer 6 should draw some attention, but aside from that, DOA and Every Party, the launch is heavy on American titles. There isn't too much planned for the rest of 2006, with Wrestle Kingdom and Dynasty Warriors 5 Special only coming to mind, making us wonder if Microsoft will have what it takes to make people forget about the lack of Japanese software on the current generation Xbox.
That ugliness aside, Microsoft is continuing with its pre-launch hype for the system. More retailers are taking pre-orders, and more elaborate displays have been appearing:
It's tough to discern the level of interest in the system at this point. A couple of major retailers we went to had about five pre-orders each, but these are shops that were requiring $10 down payment. It's presumable that places like Tsutaya, which don't require money down, will have a higher pre-order total. For what it's worth, Japan's Amazon.com has stopped taking pre-orders.
We haven't been able to find a demo unit for the X360 outside of the Xbox Lounge yet. Microsoft was supposed to have started shipping units to retailers on the 20th.
While we're not sure when that will actually take place, we now know that Microsoft is planning a nationwide tour of the Xbox 360. On 11/26, 11/27, 12/3 and 12/4, Microsoft will put the system on display at 20 retail locations throughout the country. Gamers will be able to try out games like Perfect Dark Zero and Ridge Racer 6 and will receive extra bonuses if they pre-order on the spot.
Microsoft is also planning a somewhat peculiar promotional campaign. Four locations throughout Japan will, for a limited time, receive a giant Xbox 360 monument. The display consists of a giant Xbox 360, standing twice the height of a person, with a giant controller to go along with it. The system body houses a 65 inch display, showing off footage of upcoming games. This display will be placed in Sapporo, Nagoya, Osaka and Fukuoka -- that's right, it won't make it to Tokyo!
Outside of these promotional campaigns, Microsoft has started getting more of a presence in Japanese magazines. The latest Famitsu has many pages devoted to Ninety-Nine Nights, and (perhaps more importantly) Mist Walker's latest title. First in-game screens for Blue Dragon are shown in the magazine (we saw them a few months back but were not allowed to pass them on to you) and are certainly of high enough quality to cause an impact amongst the Famitsu readership. These pics also appeared in the latest Jump, where Blue Dragon debuted earlier this year.
The Xbox 360 advertising campaign is also kicking into high gear it seems. We haven't actually spotted ads en masse on television yet, but there's no doubting that Microsoft has been working on some big CMs. Until now, most ads have been the teaser types that we shared in last week's issue (more can be found at the official Japanese Xbox site) but as of 11/22, Microsoft started airing game-specific ads for Ninety-Nine Nights, Project Gotham Racing 3 and Final Fantasy XI. The commercials focus on the change to high definition, with the N3 ad finishing with "The Violent Battle Goes High Def."
While we haven't grabbed the new commercials yet, we did manage to scan in a couple of Xbox 360 print ads from the latest gaming magazines. Check it out here:
The top ad lists all the upcoming Xbox 360 games with the phrase "To Hi-Def." Just in case you didn't get the message yet.

HOUKOKU CORNER
Welcome to the Gaming Life in Japan ad section, where you'll find the latest game advertisements, commercials and pamphlet scans from Japan. Every week, we'll be bringing you commercials, ads and pamphlets that we've spotted on TV, in magazines and at retailers or trade shows. Also be sure and check out the back issues section for previous installments.
This week, we've got just a handful of commercials to entertain you while you stuff yourself with Turkey. While eating, remember that Turkey costs a lot more in Japan.

RELEASE DATES
This section of Gaming Life in Japan provides you with an up-to-date release list of games coming out in Japan. We list pretty much everything that's been announced, including games that currently have just vague TBA release dates and even games that don't have final names (hence the abundance of "Title TBA" games).
As a source for these dates, we use a strange combination of retailers, magazines, store pamphlets and official websites. Wherever possible, we try to keep the dates official, so if it's just a rumor, you won't find it here.
Be sure and check back every week to keep up with the myriad of releases set for Japan. And if you encounter an error, please tell us.
