Hylas and the Nymphs in Art
The story of Hylas and the Nymphs is one has proven a source of inspiration for many artists; and with the basis of the Greek mythological tale being one of a beautiful hero abducted by beautiful nymphs, it is easy to see why.
Hylas was a companion of Heracles, and when Heracles joined the crew of the Argo, Hylas joined alongside his companion. On the journey to Colchis, the Argo would stop Mysia to replenish their provisions. Hylas would go out to gather water, and he would quickly located the Pegae spring, where he commenced to fill water sacks. The spring though, was also home to Naiad nymphs, and they saw the handsome Hylas, and decided to abduct him.
Thus Hylas was drawn beneath the waters of the spring, where the Naiad nymphs made him ageless and immortal, and no matter the effort made by Heracles to find Hylas, Hylas could not be found.
