Mitsis Selection Blue Domes is a multiple award-winning, all-inclusive, family-friendly 5-star resort on the south shore of Kos, which is the center island of the Dodecanese islands in the southeast Aegean. It’s a member of the Mitsis Premium Collection and is a 2023 Tripadvisor Traveller’s Choice award winner, and one of the most popular resorts on the entire island.

The resort is beautifully laid out on a large rectangular plot of land which descends to the sea and is bisected by a serpentine lagoon featuring little waterfalls and foot bridges. The architecture is elegant and spare, featuring exposed beam ceilings and little touches like a marble cube in the middle of a fountain with a flame rising from a circular cut out in its center that looks like a modern art sculpture. A beach bar built on an island in the middle of the lagoon, and lots of wood decking, wooden, upholstered beach beds, and natural wood shaded cabanas on some of the rooftops. Not to mention the signature architectural feature: the abundance of small blue domes on the roofs of many of the rooms.

Mitsis Blue Domes Resort & Spa

The craggy peak of 700m-high Mt. Dikeos rises dramatically a couple km behind the complex, and the beach is 160m of sand, sea and umbrella-shaded sun beds. The 499-room resort is stuffed with interesting features; swimming pools, some with water slides, placed at various locations, 12 restaurants and food venues, 6 bars, a spa, a playground, a library, a painting room, a music room, a puppet theatre, a projection room, an internet corner, a tennis court, a mini soccer court, an 800-seat amphitheatre and a 500-seat conference hall.

Guests praise the food choices and quality, the layout of the resort and the entertainment. They especially raved about the friendly and helpful staff. Many guests gave the resort superlative ratings, such as “best holiday ever.”

Rooms

Mitsis Blue Domes offers a total of 11 different room types. Because the coastline in this part of Kos faces southeast, the rooms are flooded with golden light in the early morning hours, and you can enjoy the sunrise on your balcony with your first cup of the day.

Rooms are spacious and take full advantage of the brilliant Mediterranean sun. Ceilings are blond- stained exposed beam and boards, a rarity in timber-poor Greece, which greatly favours plastered and painted cement ceilings. A special treat are that many of the bungalows feature either barrel-style or dome-style ceilings painted sky blue, and now you know how this resort got its name. The domes add a charming, chapel-like effect to the room decor.

Shutters, window frames, and the mullion-windowed bathroom sliding doors are all stained wood, adding to the rustic feel of the beamed ceilings. Balcony walls are, , are solid, marble-capped masonry, instead of the usual metal railings add to the atmosphere of traditional island architecture.

There are a host of standard room amenities including marble floors, private balcony, coffee and tea maker, beach and pool towels, satellite TV, 4MBs speed free WiFi,  telephone in  the bathroom, magnifying mirror, bathtub with anti-slip bottom and railings, hair dryer, bathrobe, towels and slippers, and upgraded bathroom amenities.

In the Area

At a distance of only 5 km from the mainland, Kos is one of the closest large Greek island to Turkey. With its archeological ruins, medieval castle, and pristine beaches, Kos has something for everyone. Kos City, on circular, narrow-mouthed Mandraki Harbor on the island's northeast coast, is a picturesque little place of minarets and churches, bars and bazaars, nightclubs and tavernas. The most impressive structure, however, is Kos Castle, a fortress erected in 1315 on the east side of the harbor's mouth by the Hospitaller Knights of St. John, who dominated the island just as their fort still dominates Mandraki.

Kos was among the first Aegean islands to attract tourists, way back during the 1930's when the Italians governed it and the rest of the Dodecanese. Ancient Halicarnassus, now the Turkish city of Bodrum, home to one of the 7 Wonders of the Ancient World, the Tomb of Masusolus, is a short boat trip away. (The term "mausoleum" is derived from this tomb, which was 45 meters high and adorned with sculpted reliefs.) Kos has fertile, productive soil from eons of volcanic activity, and is famous for its melons. Kos supports as many cows, they say, as permanent residents, which number about 35,000. The interior of the island is quiet, undeveloped, and largely flat, which makes travel by bicycle feasible.

Hippocrates, "The Father of Western Medicine," was born on Kos in 460 BC. His Hippocratic School of Medicine revolutionized medical science, establishing it as a separate discipline, when it had previously been considered a branch of philosophy and theurgy (literally, "divine-working," a sort of ritual magic). He was the first to propose that illnesses were natural in their causes, and not necessarily spiritual. He trained at the Asklepion (healing temple) of Kos, ruins of which still survive. He moved to Athens, met Plato, who wrote about Hippocrates, and died in Larissa, central Greece, some say at the age of 100.

The Hippocratia is Kos’s most important ongoing cultural festival. Named after Hippoctrates, its goal is to preserve the island’s customs and traditions. The festival sponsors dozens of events taking place from June till October. During this festival you can attend and participate in such activities as concerts, theatrical works, art exhibitions, traditional dance, religious celebrations, and related festivals such as the honey festival at Antimachia and the classical music festival. A high point of the festival is the re-enactment of the Hippocratic oath in the ancient Asklepielon of Kos. In this ceremony graduating medical school students take the time-honoured oath whose chief precept is to “abstain from all intentional wrong-doing and harm.”

Elsewhere on Kos, Kardemena, about 5km down the coast from Mitsis Blue Domes, offers long, sandy beaches, and nightlife frequented by tourists from the UK. The town also has a combination Folk Art/Maritime Museum. From Kardemena, boats leave daily for the smaller island of Nissyros, 17 km south, which has some very nice, quiet beaches, and quiet villages unspoiled by tourists.

Local Beaches: Two kilometers north of Kos Town is Lambi Beach, which also is a center of night life on the island. East of Kos Town, then south, as one rounds the eastern end of the island, there are several decent beaches in an area generally called Psalidi. Rounding the end of the island, and then bending back west on its south shore, maybe 12 km from Kos Town, there is the resort area of Agios Fokas, featuring the Bros Therma springs, hot water which flows from the base of the area cliffs and mingles with the seawater in a man-made pool circumscribed by rocks in which bathers can loll around in meter-deep, warm water even in the dead of winter. It's one of the most popular spots on Kos.

Kos is a wonderful, fascinating place to spend your summer holiday, and Mitsis Blue Domes Resort is one of the finest resorts you can find there.
