George Clooney never expected to fall as hard as he did for his wife, Amal Clooney.

When the Academy Award-winning actor and the international human rights lawyer first met in July 2013, the two were not expecting a whirlwind romance. At the time, George was a 52-year-old bachelor who wasn’t thinking about marriage or having a family. Amal shared a similar sentiment about herself. “I was 35 when I met him,” she told Vogue in 2018. “It wasn’t obvious that it was going to happen for me. And I wasn’t willing or excited about the idea of getting married or having a family in the absence of that.”

And yet, George and Amal knew they had something special. After months of staying in touch, they went on their first official date in October 2013 and were engaged by the next spring in April 2014.

So, what was it about Amal that caught George’s eye? Instead of wondering, actors Jason Bateman, Sean Hayes and Will Arnett asked the big question when George appeared in an episode of their SmartLess podcast, which debuted on March 8. The Midnight Sky star got candid about what it was like falling in love with Amal.

“The truth was, I met this amazing woman and she took my breath away,” he said on the podcast. “She was brilliant and funny and beautiful and kind. I was sort of swept off my feet. We got engaged after a few months and got married within the first year that we met. It surprised me more than anybody else in the world and everybody else was surprised.”

Now, more than seven years since tying the knot in September 2014, George and Amal are still getting to know each other in different ways. While he has come a long way from playing Dr. Doug Ross on the NBC medical drama ER, the show hasn’t completely stayed in the past. According to George, Amal finally got a chance to watch it, and she wasn’t exactly amused by his character’s behavior — and she let George know it.

“My wife is watching them now and it’s getting me in a lot of trouble because I forgot all the terrible things I was doing picking up on women,” he said. And when Will brought up that perhaps Amal might still get starstruck after watching him do his thing, George quickly shut that down. “Yeah, that’s not my wife,” he said.

Jokes aside, George never passes up an opportunity to share how “proud” he is to be Amal’s husband and how happy he is with her. His joy grew even more when the two welcomed fraternal twins in June 2017 — a daughter, Ella, and son, Alexander.

Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter later that fall, George gushed about how fortunate he felt to have found the love of his life.

“Every single day of my life, I just feel lucky,” he told the outlet. “Lucky in my career. Lucky enough to have found the perfect partner. Sometimes in life it doesn’t happen on your schedule, but you find the person that you were always supposed to be with. That’s how I feel, and I know that’s how Amal feels.”
