Billbergias are striking bromeliads native to South America, Central America, Mexico and the West Indies. They're often grown as houseplants for their rich green foliage and showy pink, green and purple flowers.
Billbergia 'Hallelujah' is one of several striking cultivars to originate from the species Billbergia vittata. It has an upright growth habit and red-green foliage marked with white splotches to Pollock-like effect. The flowers are an unusual colour combination of aubergine-purple, tea green and fuchsia.
For best results, grow Billbergia 'Hallelujah' indoors as a houseplant, moving it outdoors in the summer months to a partially shaded spot. Grow in humus-rich, very well-drained soil, keeping the central funnel topped up with water. Move to a frost-free location over winter in bright, indirect light and restrict watering to once every week or so. If your climate permits, it can be grown outdoors year-round.
