False goatsbeard, astilbe, is a perennial with showy plumes of dramatic flowers atop fern-like foliage. It’s perfect for a shady corner, where its dramatic blooms will add height and colour. There are many varieties of astilbe to choose from, bearing flowers ranging in colour from dark pink to cream-white. Their flowers are adored by pollinators, especially hoverflies.
Astilbe x arendsii 'Spinell' is a dramatic variety, bearing deep cerise-pink blooms over red foliage, which gradually matures to dark green. The Royal Horticultural Society has given it the prestigious Award of Garden Merit.
Grow Astilbe x arendsii 'Spinell' in moist but well-drained soil in full sun to partial shade. Water in dry weather and cut back hard after blooming. Divide congested clumps in spring or autumn.
