Lady Gaga is a favorite among Grammy voters. They seem to take any opportunity they can to nominate her, and they’ve already bestowed a large number of prizes upon the singer-songwriter. As she reportedly works on new music, she has one tune that is already Grammy-eligible this year, and it could bring her to categories she’s never reached before.
In late September 2023, Gaga released her first new single in some time. “Sweet Sounds of Heaven” is a duet with The Rolling Stones, and it was featured on their latest album, Hackney Diamonds. The tune served as the second official single from the set, and it grabbed headlines and made quite the splash when it arrived.
“Sweet Sounds of Heaven” could easily earn both Gaga and The Rolling Stones a Grammy nomination–perhaps several. The most likely category the tune could end up in is Best Rock Performance. Unlike in some fields, the Recording Academy doesn’t have separate verticals for solo and group performances, as many of the names nominated for rock awards are in bands–though those fields used to exist.
The Rolling Stones are no strangers to the rock categories at the Grammys, but Gaga is. So far, while she’s been nominated for 36 trophies throughout her career, she’s never been included in any of the rock-specific fields. That could change later this year, thanks to her latest collaboration.
In the past, the Rolling Stones have also found themselves in the pop categories as well, and that’s not out of the realm of possibility with their Gaga collaboration. Both the pop superstar and the rock band have been up for duo/group-focused pop honors, and Gaga has won that vertical before. While “Sweet Sounds of Heaven” is very much a rock tune–with tinges of soul and gospel–where it’s submitted and how the Recording Academy labels it could surprise some.
The Grammys love the Rolling Stones, and it's clear that voters are already liking this latest chapter in their legacy. The lead single from Hackney Diamonds, “Angry,” brought the band back to the award show for the first time in more than half a decade. The tune was up for Best Rock Song, and while it didn’t win the trophy, the fact that the group was included is a sign that they may soon be in the running for more rock Grammys.
The 2024 Grammys just took place only a short time ago, but believe it or not, the eligibility period for the 2025 show is nearly halfway through. Eligibility for the next ceremony began on September 16, 2023, and it ends on August 30, 2024.
