See Formentera, The Smallest And Prettiest Of Spain’s Balearic Islands

This article is more than 4 years old.

The beautiful island of Formentera is far from a secret, but it is much less visited than its party, party, party sister island of Ibiza. In fact, it’s the smallest of Spain’s Balearic islands and in my opinion it’s the prettiest.

Formentera retains a laid back and relaxed vibe, you’ll find cute souvenir shops, amazing restaurants and some of the nicest beaches in the region. Visitors come from across Spain, Germany and Italy and to a lesser extent from the United Kingdom, so although English is widely spoken, you’ll hear it less than in other busier tourist areas.

The other Balearic islands include Ibiza, Mallorca (Majorca) and Menorca.

Sometimes travel writers don’t really want to tell the world about a special place. They fear that it will become too popular and be overrun with tourists. We have to weigh up the benefits of promoting somewhere truly amazing, including considering the positive impact it can have on the local economy, with the danger of overloading the area with visitors.

Because Formentera is an island in Spain in an already developed and booming tourism industry, it’s safe to point people this way and let them discover the quieter side of the Balearic Islands.

Head this way for sun, seclusion and amazing seafood!

How Do You Get To Formentera?

You can access the island via a ferry ride from Ibiza. The journey takes you from Ibiza Town to La Savina and takes between thirty minutes to an hour.

Once on the island you can hire a bicycle, car, or a moped or use taxis and buses to get around.

Where To Stay

For a luxurious stay, choose the beautiful five star oasis of Five Flowers Hotel Spa Formentera near Es Pujols beach.

The hotel is a riot of color including the nightly illumination of the building which makes a pretty show to watch as you enjoy a drink at the rooftop bar.

Almost as beautiful is the less colorful but equally stylish Blanco Hotel just steps away from Five Flowers. This hotel is bathed in clean, sophisticated, white. The color features everywhere in the design and provides a beautiful backdrop against the sun.

Some rooms come with a rooftop Jacuzzi and an expansive balcony space.

The staff at both hotels are amazingly friendly and intuitive, this is effortless customer service that ensures every guest feels special.

Where To Eat

The breakfast buffet at Blanco hotel is really tasty and varied, as is their lunch and dinner menus but for special occasions head over to Five Flowers and up to their rooftop Japanese restaurant Kokoy.

Here you can try the multi course tasting menu and feast on locally sourced seafood and delicious sushi.

If you fancy something different wander down to the beach at Es Pujos and dine at any of the boardwalk restaurants which offer beautiful ocean views.

Where To Relax

It’s easy to relax in Formentera, as the locals say, “It’s paradise here!”

Spend your day on the beach at Es Pujos right by your hotel or take a short taxi ride to Platja Illetes, one of the most popular beaches on the island. It can get really packed with visitors here in the summer, but the waters are beautifully clear and the sand is soft and clean.

Walk a little farther down passing the Juan y Andrea restaurant until you reach Playa de Levante and you may well be able to find a secluded spot of beach all to yourself!

Don’t be alarmed, there is a nude beach here. If you’re not up for au natrel sunbathing just keep walking and you’ll come to a regular beach soon enough.

From oceanfront cafes and bars to the beautiful fig trees and all those white sandy beaches, Formentera truly is the prettiest little island in Spain.
