Sunjoy Gold Pillar is one of my favorite landscaping plants.

I harp constantly on how contrasting foliage really is the key to a beautiful garden, flowers are all well and good but they are only for a short period of time, foliage is forever. Every garden bed should have something with yellow foliage, something with red foliage, something with blue foliage. Gold Pillar Barberry is a great great choice for yellow foliage.

Like the name pillar suggests this plant grows more columnar than spready. It tends to grow up, not out, compact and upright. It is deciduous, not really any winter interest. It is covered with little thorns making it excellent for security, such as planting beneath a low window, any robbers trying to break in will be in for a surprise. Deer despise it, nothing eats it, its really hard to kill once established, you can cut it back to the ground and it will come back.

Barberry has some degree of a bad reputation because some varieties set seed and then colonize forests etc. This is NOT TRUE OF ALL BARBERRY though. Specialty cultivates such as this one tend to be pretty sterile. In anycase, in over 20 years of growing these, I have never not one time found a seedling. Not once. Not a single time.

Consider planting one with a dark leaved plant such as the black lace elderberry or various wine weigela I sell. It also looks great next to the much more common red leaved barberry.

The barberry plants and At Last Roses from the same order arrived in bad shape. They got shipped later in the week (6 days after order placed!), got stuck in USPS system over the weekend and took another 5 days to arrive. They were very small for the price, moldy and shriveled. I planted them right away but they still lost almost all the leaves. I have bought many plants online from several different stores like Costco, HomeDepot, PerfectPlants, etc and this order was in the worst condition. After about 3 weeks, they still look barely surviving while other plants bounced back by this time. I hope they survive.

NEVER AGAIN! lived and learned. A pint size plant for $15? And not to mention, in terrible condition. I can't even plant them outside at this point. We are going to try and keep them alive inside for the winter. Do your h.w. and ask questions. Don't assume with what the web site says is correct.

Hey the listing clearly states it is a 3.5 inch pot you're purchasing. They can be planted outside, there is no need to shelter them inside. Plants need a cold dormant period.
