Agapanthus africanus, also called Lily of the Nile, African Lily
Lily of the Nile is an attractive evergreen perennial from Southern Africa. It produces glossy clumps of long arching strap-like leaves. Large rounded clusters of lily-type flowers are produced on long erect stems above the foliage. Agapanthus is great for accent planting, edging, or planting in mass as ground cover. They also make excellent container specimens and can be used in cut flower arrangements.
They are medium size Agapanthus producing foliage to 18" to 24" tall and forming a clump up to 2-3 feet wide. Large clusters of white flowers are borne on erect 2-4 foot stems.
Lily of the Nile is very easy to grow and care for, it can even thrive on conditions of neglect and will naturalize readily. Plant in fast-draining soil; provide normal water and fertilizer during growing season. Agapanthus is frost tolerant and can be grown outdoors in full-sun or light shade in zones 8-11, it is hardy to around 20-25 F, but should be protected with mulch and cover when temps are below 20 F for extended periods.
Sow in trays, pots, etc of good seed compost in a propagator or warm place to maintain an optimum temperature of 65-70F . Sow in well drained compost, just covering the seed with compost. Sowing Time: April to May. Germination usually takes 1-4 months.
