When we hear the names Ackworth, Quaker, Vierlande, a picture instantly appears of motifs rich in pattern, rosettes, rhombus shapes and half medallions stitched in random design on fabric.
Worked almost entirely in cross stitch, the motifs were embroidered in a series of medallions and octagons with a border or half shapes. Within these shapes were embroidered designs which have become 'hallmarks' of Quaker samplers; a chained rose, swans and trees. There are many meanings behind the types of motifs they used: The rosette patterns, or circle is regarded as a universal symbol of perfection, infinity and is silent in use in the wedding ring and bridal/funeral wreath.
