Application:
The aerial part of T. serpyllum has a long tradition of being used in many countries of Europe and worldwide as an anthelmintic, a strong antiseptic, an antispasmodic, a carminative, deodorant, diaphoretic, disinfectant, expectorant, sedative and tonic.
It is most frequently used for treating illnesses and problems related to the gastrointestinal and respiratory systems. In the Western Balkans, this species has an important use as a sedative, or to improve blood circulation, and then as anticholesterolemic and immunostimulant.
T. serpyllum is also used externally as an antiseptic, to treat wounds, to combat eczema, or to reduce swelling. Wild thyme is used as an important herb in cookery, mainly for flavouring meat or fish. [1, 2]
A study showed that the supercritical CO2 extract protected ground pork patties against color degradation and reduced significantly the lipid and protein oxidation. [3]
