George Segal

George Segal was an American actor.

He is best known for his portrayal of brainy and neurotic characters as seen in film and television over the past six decades. Most recently, he played Pops in nearly 200 episodes of the television series The Goldbergs.

After serving in the U.S. Army and earning a Bachelor’s degree in drama from Columbia University, Segal studied at the Actor’s Studio under Lee Strasberg and Uta Hagen.

He would go on to earn accolades for his work in comedy and drama, landing an Oscar nomination for Best Actor in a Supporting Role in Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? (1966).

A prominent figure on the big screen, Segal appeared in The Young Doctors (1961), The Longest Day (1962), King Rat (1965), Bye Bye Braverman (1968), Where’s Poppa? (1970), A Touch of Class (1973), California Split (1974), Fun with Dick and Jane (1977), Rollercoaster (1977), Look Who’s Talking (1989), The Mirror Has Two Faces (1996), and 2012 (2009).

He also had recurring television roles in Just Shoot Me!, Entourage, Tracy Takes On…, Retired at 35, Murphy’s Law, and High Tide and guest starred in a number of shows including Pushing Daisies, Boston Legal, Private Practice, Caroline in the City, Murder, She Wrote, and The Alfred Hitchcock Hour.

Segal died March 23, 2021 in Santa Rosa, California. He was 87.
