Gemma Atkinson had spoken widely about wanting to have a vaginal birth following her emergency c-section with her daughter Mia, now aged three.

So, when Gemma shared the news that she had welcomed her new baby, Thiago, on the 17th of July, many fans wanted to know if she had got her longed-for VBAC (vaginal birth after c-section).

This afternoon, Gemma took to Instagram to update her followers and to share her birth story.

The former Hollyoaks actress said: “Lots of you have asked if I got my much hoped for VBAC….[sic]”

Sharing a photo of herself in her hospital gown, Gemma said: “This was me on mon 17th July 3hrs after an elected C section. I didn’t get my vaginal birth.

“My waters broke and I went into labour and stayed at home for as long as possible (it helped that the Wimbledon men’s final was on!).”

The mum-of-two went on to say: “My contractions got down to every 6 mins or so and then slowly just stopped. We headed into the hospital 24hrs after my waters broke as they had changed colour a little. Thiago had opened his bowels. Thanks son!”

The Hits Radio DJ explained that she was offered the artificial hormone to induce labour, but that she had already decided against this a few weeks ago, and would opt for a c-section in this situation.

Gemma went on to explain: “This time was SO much more relaxed. It was actually a wonderful experience and it just so happened that the same surgeon who delivered Mia was on shift. So she delivered Thiago as well.

“Of course recovery is still tough, it’s a huge operation regardless, but I couldn’t be happier in the outcome of how he arrived. It felt like somehow it was meant to be this way.”

The 38-year-old went said that her mum is currently staying with her to help with baby Thiago and Mia, as her partner, Gorka Marquez is away working on Strictly Come Dancing.

Gemma and Gorka originally met when she was a contestant on Strictly Come Dancing, and got together following her time on the show.
