Rihanna's Tattoos: A Guide To The Fenty Beauty Founder's Body Art

On June 22, 2021, Rihanna and boyfriend ASAP Rocky were pictured on a date night in New York City and people had a lot of feelings. The PDA-pictures were adorable - Rihanna wore a pink fluffy hat with a vintage Dior sleep dress, ASAP wore head-to-toe leather and Rihanna appeared to have covered up a tattoo on her ankle....

On Rihanna's right ankle, she has tattoo of a bird - said to be a falcon - with spread wings.

Rihanna also has the year 1988 inked in block lettering on the front of her right foot, which happens to be the year the Grammy winning singer was born.

On the back of her right leg, Rihanna has a skull and crossbones which was given a feminine twist with a red bow.

Rihanna's hands are some of the most decorated parts of her body. Her right hand in particular has detailed henna-inspired inking running up from the wrist to the bottom of her fingers, which unsurprisingly were the works of Bang Bang.

The artist told E! in 2013 that he spent five hours on the design, explaining: 'The inspiration was henna art, we wanted something really decorative, feminine and sexy. We thought that was the closest in style where we could shift and make it look decorative.'

Rihanna has added to her hand tattoos over the years. In 2009, before Bang Bang got to work, she had this print around her thumb. Then in 2013, while touring in New Zealand, she got a traditional Maori tribal print tattooed using a mallet, ink pigment and a chisel.

Before the henna tattoo, Riri also had 'Sssh' inked on her index finger. Considering the index finger is the one you raise to your lips when telling people to be quiet - we see what she did there.

Over on her left hand, Rihanna has the word 'love' inscribed on her middle finger.

One of Rihanna's best known tattoos is the sizeable Egyptian goddess Isis tattoo inked on her ribcage. The beautifully detailed work was completed in 2012 and a homage to the singer's late grandmother Dolly, who she was extremely close to.

'Goddess Isis – Complete Woman – Model for future generations,' the singer wrote on Instagram at the time, per the Hollywood Reporter.

The tattoo extends up her body, and in this photo Isis can be seen in more detail.

Tattoo artist Bang Bang revealed in a 2018 ELLE UK interview that the first inking he gave Rihanna was a quote in Sanskrit which she had inked down her hip when she was 18.

The singer also has an Arabic phrase which reportedly roughly translates to 'Freedom in God'.

With a penchant for ancient Egyptian artwork, Rihanna has a portrait of Queen Nefertiti - who was the royal wife of a Pharaoh - on her torso above the Arabic writing.

On her left shoulder Rihanna has the date of her best friend Melissa's birthday in roman numerals. In a 2011 appearance on the Ellen DeGeneres Show, the singer revealed Melissa had repaid her by getting Rihanna's birth date inked on her body.

On her right shoulder blade, Rihanna has the phrase 'Never failure, always a lesson,' which was transcribed in mirrored writing so she can read it back to herself. Speaking after getting the tattoo in 2009, she told Access Hollywood: 'That's my motto for life... I did it backwards so I could read it to myself in the mirror.'

Rihanna also has a small Christian crucifix cross inked to the right of the writing.

In 2010, Rihanna had the French words 'rebelle fleur' inked permanently on her neck which translates to 'rebel flower'.

Running down the back of Rihanna's neck to her torso are a collection of small, intricate stars.
