This project provides a new perspective on the importance and relevance of renovation in a context where architecture must adapt to the needs of changing families. The context of intervention was one of the main challenges surrounding the renovation of this typical suburban house, located in a neighborhood on the outskirts of Quebec City. Instead of relying on demolition, the project takes advantage of the existing to renew the experience.

By concentrating the interventions at the rear and inside, the project highlights the large vegetated courtyard of the existing residence. On the front facade, the intervention remains silent and allows to keep the global coherence of the neighborhood where it is located. The complete reorganization of the interior, the opening of the rear façade and the addition of a volumetry that projects towards the courtyard support a new relationship between interior and exterior.

The reorganization of the circulation spaces in the heart of the house frees up a large open area in the back that houses the living room and kitchen. This area, which is conducive to family gatherings, extends into the courtyard, with a screened-in outdoor room that allows for longer seasons. The openness of the rear façade bathes the space in light, both direct and diffuse, and generates rich atmospheres. In particular, a skylight crossed by joists generates a play of light and shadow that magnifies the kitchen space. The double-height opening above the dining room welcomes natural light and creates new visual breakthroughs that participate in the (re)discovery of the house.

By creating strong links with the exterior and diversifying the light entries, this renovation offers a quality living environment where everyday moments can be celebrated.
