PSV 2-2 Sevilla: Bosz frustrated despite late Teze equaliser

PSV Eindhoven rescued a late point on a dramatic Champions League night against Sevilla, but for manager Peter Bosz was left ruing his team’s defensive frailties.

Jordan Teze scrambled the ball into the net from Hirving Lozano’s free-kick in the fifth minute of injury time, after Youssef En-Nesyri looked to have won the match with a flashing header shortly before the end.

Bosz was especially aggrieved at the manner Sevilla regained the lead straight from the restart after Luuk de Jong had equalised for the first time from the penalty spot.

“It’s one of my hobby-horses,” Bosz said. “You often see teams concede a goal straight after scoring one, but we didn’t learn that lesson as a team.”

Bosz said the atmosphere in the dressing room after the match was subdued. “Even though we scored an equaliser right at the death. That tells you something. It doesn’t feel like a point won for me. We wanted to win here.”

An open game with plenty of chances for both sides remained deadlocked until the 68th minute, when Nemanja Gudelj eluded two defenders at a corner with a well-timed run to fire Sevilla into the lead.

The Spaniards looked to have gone ahead earlier in the second half when André Ramalho’s wayward pass for PSV let in Adria Pedrosa, but the VAR replay showed the striker had brushed the ball with his hand before scoring.

The result leaves PSV bottom of Group B with one point, behind Sevilla who have drawn both games. PSV’s next match is away to Lens, who top the group on four points after beating 2-1 Arsenal, on October 24.

Test for Feyenoord

The other Dutch contender, Feyenoord, will hope to follow up their opening win against Celtic with a good result in Spain against Atlético.

The champions will be without top scorer Santiago Gímenez, who has bagged 10 goals in seven matches in the Eredivisie but is serving a two-match suspension in the Champions League.

Coach Arie Slot, who has named Japanese striker Ayase Ueda as Gímenez’s replacement, said his team would face a stiff test against Diego Simeone’s side.

“We’ll need to double the quality of the last six matches. And that has everything to do with the quality and stamina of Atlético,” he said.
