Scott Patterson has said that his new role in The CW drama Sullivan's Crossing is an "extension" of his character Luke Danes from Gilmore Girls.

Patterson, who played Luke for all seven seasons – and the miniseries – of beloved comedy drama Gilmore Girls has reunited with co-star Chad Michael Murray for their new show, which follows a star neurosurgeon who returns to her hometown of Sullivan's Crossing and her estranged father Sully (Patterson)

Speaking to Decider, Patterson has said that while the gruff but affable Luke and mysterious Sully may seem different on the surface, it's easy to view the latter as "an extension" of the former.

"Imagine if Luke and Lorelai never got together and Luke became despondent, they shut down Luke's Diner, and he moved out of the country," Patterson began, describing Sully's trajectory in Sullivan's Crossing.

Continuing, he clarified that Sully is the character that Luke would have become, had several key aspects of his life been different.

"He went to the woods and mountains in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and opened up a campground, put nose to the grindstone, and things just started happening. It's almost an extension of Luke in a way. It's really not too far-fetched to make that parallel."

Luke and Lorelai (Lauren Graham) ended the Gilmore Girls spinoff A Year in the Life happily dating – and in its final scene, it was revealed that Laureli is pregnant.

Sullivan's Crossing follows Batwoman's Morgan Kohan in an adaptation of the novel by Robyn Carr.

Kohan's neurosurgeon Maggie Sullivan returns to her hometown after her business partner is indicted for fraud, and she's charged with negligence. Gilmore Girls alumnus Michael Murray costars as newcomer to the town, Cal Jones.

"Sullivan's Crossing is an emotionally rich, authentic family drama that will immediately resonate with audiences thanks to an incredible cast and relatable themes of self-reflection, second chances and the power of community," said Brad Schwartz (CW's entertainment president) via Deadline.

Sullivan's Crossing airs on The CW.
